The basic structure of a tyre is further explained.
Take a Look Inside a Modern Tyre
If you are wondering now what are the components which make up a tyre, there are two main structural elements:
- The Tread and Belt Assembly
- Casing
- They are further divided into many layers.
Tread
Starting with outer layer this principally consists of synthetic and the natural rubber component. On a new Tyre Fitting, this textured surface ensures high mileage, good grip on the road and water expulsion, just like your new sports shoes. The tread has 3 areas:
- Cap
- Base
- Shoulder
- Jointless Cap Plies
This layer, which is directly below the tread, enables travel at high speed.
- Steel Cord Belt Plies
This layer provides rigidity to the tyre, functions:
- Enhances shape retention
- Reduces rolling resistance
- Increase your tyre’s mileage performance
Casing
After the basic structure of a house, you make it home by making it warm and comfortable, likewise the casing cushions the tyre and contains air- functioning like an inner tube. It’s the air- not the tyre itself, that takes up the carload. That’s why inflation pressure is so important.
Made up of 3 Components:
- Textile Cord Ply- controls the internal pressure of the tyre and maintain its shape.
- Inner Liner- Controls tyre pressure and acts an inner tube in tubeless car tyres
- Sidewall- the exterior wall of the tyre which protects the casing from external damage and atmospheric conditions.
Tyre Bead
It makes up the edge of the tyre that sits securely on the wheel groove.
The bead is made up of 3 parts:
- Bead Reinforcement- made of nylon or aramid, it enhances directional stability and facilitates precise steering response.
- Bead Apex- the bead apex performs the same tasks as the bead reinforcement as well as additional steering comfort.
- Bead Core- this ensures that the tyre sits firmly on the wheel rim.
